The Laptop is Staying Home: My First True Vacation in 16 Years

This Friday, I’m doing something I haven’t done in 16 years: I’m going on vacation without my laptop.

If my laptop had a passport, it would be well-worn and bursting with stamps— The Caribbean, Europe, Australia, Africa, and the list goes on. Over the years, I’ve worked poolside, beachside, countryside, and sometimes even roadside (thanks, unpredictable Wi-Fi). I’ve proofed CDAP projects in Ireland, launched websites in Jamaica, posted to socials from all over the world, and even delivered a big pitch while on safari in South Africa—using a flashlight during a rolling blackout.

paper airplaneTravel has always been part of my life, but so has working while traveling. For an hour or two each day, I’ve stayed plugged in, kept projects moving, and helped clients hit their goals—even when time zones and power outages tried to interfere.

But not this time.

This time, the laptop is staying home.

I’m finally giving myself permission to take a real break. I’m looking forward to time away from the screen—to rest, reset, and get inspired. I’ll still be scribbling lists and mapping out ideas (because let’s be honest, planning is my happy place). And yes, I’ll still have my earbuds in, soaking up business books on Audible and catching up on some favourite podcasts—but to me, that’s joy, not work.

Of course, stepping away is made a lot easier knowing I have an amazing co-op student—Justin Paré—holding down the fort and ready to support me if needed. I’m also leaning on AI in all the ways possible, from booking dinner reservations in Mykonos to replying to client emails on the fly. (I rarely type anything on my phone these days—thank you, AI.) If you haven’t yet grabbed our AI Quick-Start Cheat Sheet, it’s a great resource for learning how to make AI your travel (and workday) companion.

Now I’m curious—do you take your laptop when you travel?
And if you're a fellow audiobook or podcast fan, I’d love your recommendations! What’s on your must-listen list right now?

When I get back, I’ll be rested, recharged, and ready to roll. If you’re looking to ramp up your marketing this fall, let’s book a call in August and set you up for success.

New call-to-action

Here’s to breaks that recharge and creativity that never really clocks out.
